OLDSMOBILE — Detroit & Lansing, Michigan — (1897–1942 et. seq.) — The Olds Motor Vehicle Company was organized in Lansing, Michigan on August 21st, 1897, and Oldsmobile remains today America's oldest manufacturer of automobiles. The selection of 1897 as the official Olds beginning in the automotive field is somewhat arbitrary, because Ransom Eli Olds had already been experimenting for a decade by that time. Indeed, he tested his first car in 1887, a cumbersome three-wheeled steamer which ran but not very well; in 1891 he followed with another steamer which ran better and even made the pages of Scientific American. His first gasoline car arrived in 1896, a dos-a-dos four-seater perched high on its chassis, and powered by a single-cylinder 5 hp engine.
