STANLEY STEAM — Watertown, Massachusetts — (1897–1899)/Lawrence, Massachusetts — (1899–1901)/Newton, Massachusetts — (1901–1927) — Francis E. and Freeland O. Stanley were identical twins who looked rather like the Smith brothers on the cough drop box. They produced the most famous steam car in the world. Their first effort was completed in 1897, though they had tried and failed in a steam car project a decade earlier in Lewiston, Maine. In 1888 for business reasons they moved their Stanley Dry Plate Company (which produced photographic equipment) to the Boston area, settling in Newton and establishing their factory in nearby Watertown. A demonstration of the Field steam car had been the impetus behind their 1887 try at building a steamer in Lewiston. In 1896 in Boston the brothers saw the steam carriage built by George Whitney, and decided to try again, believing they could do better. ...
