SPIRIT — SERIES 40 — FOUR/SIX — Gremlin's more luxurious replacement kept the same engine choices and basic design as its subcompact predecessor, but with much larger rear side windows on the two-door sedan. New quad rectangular headlamps flanked a clean four-row, horizontally ribbed grille with center medallion. Clear, wide parking lights sat below the headlights. Horizontal amber reflectors were mounted at the forward end of the front fenders, ‘Spirit’ emblems at their rear. Slightly rounded rectangular taillamps held inset backup lights. Aluminum bumpers had black end caps. Joining that familiar sedan was a good-looking two-door Liftback coupe. Front styling was similar, but the rear end held extra-wide four-section taillamps that stretched from the license plate to the outer edge of the panel.
