SPIRIT — SERIES 40 — FOUR/SIX — Spirits looked the same outside, but could be purchased with the new five-speed overdrive transmission — the first domestic subcompact to offer that option. Once again, base and DL trim were available, along with the sporty GT package. Base powertrain was the 2.5-liter (l 51 cu. in.) four-cylinder “Iron Duke” engine from Pontiac, with four-speed floor shift, manual front disc brakes, and P185/75R14 black glass-belted radial tires. Standard equipment also included two-speed wiper/washers, front sway bar, compact spare tire, lighter, color-keyed carpeting, inside hood release, locking glovebox, dome light, vinyl bucket front seats, fold-down rear bench seat, energy-absorbing bumpers, side pin striping and wheel covers.
