1984 AMC Encore, 4-cyl.

(Renault) ENCORE — SERIES 90 — FOUR — Built on the same 97.8 in. wheelbase as the Alliance, the sportier Encore hatchback stood three inches shorter in overall length. It was AMC's attempt to attract youthful buyers, now that the Spirits and GTs were gone. Encores used the same 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine as the Alliance, with a standard four-speed (overdrive) manual transmission; five-speed optional. Three-and five-door versions were offered (see note above). Each had a stubby rear end with distinctive backlight and taillamp structure. Encore's emblem sat on the side of the grille, while Alliance's was at the center. Base Encores were nicely fitted inside with carpeting, fabric-covered headliner molding and visors, a day/night rearview mirror, lighter, inside hood release, console with stowage box, plus vinyl bucket front seats and 60/40 fold-down rear seat.
