ENCORE — SERIES 90 — FOUR — Base model Encores left the lineup so S was the lowest-priced liftback. One new model was added: the top-level Electronic, whose instrument cluster held an array of hi-tech doodads. It included both digital and analog speedometers; a trip computer; tachometer; fuel gauge; oil level, temperature and pressure lights; plus a bar graph display that monitored engine functions. Elsewhere in the lineup, about the most thrilling change was an increase in alternator output from 50 to 60 amps. Only S and LS Encores were offered in five-door liftback form; the GS and Electronic were three-door (actually two passenger doors) only. The 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine was standard; 1.7-liter optional. Entry level (S) Encores now sported black bumpers, cargo area carpeting, clearcoat paint, and an AM radio.
