1998 OLDSMOBILE Eighty-Eight, V-6

EIGHTY-EIGHT — SERIES 3H — V-6 — The Eighty-Eight series was again comprised of base and LS full-size sedans. The Series II 3800 (3.8-liter) V-6 was again the standard engine, but Eighty-Eights received the new 4T65-E Hydra-Matic electronically controlled four-speed automatic transaxle as a replacement for the formerly used 4T60-E unit. The 4T65-E transaxle featured dual drive chains as a noise reduction measure. An adaptive shift capability automatically compensated for vibrations that occurred over time to maintain consistently smooth gear changes. The transaxle used state-of-the-art lubricant that could be driven for 100,000 miles before changing. Also new for 1998 were next-generation dual airbags and improved wheel speed sensors installed on the Eighty-Eight's standard anti-lock braking system.
